Back-to-School Physicals: What Parents Need to Know

August 20, 2026

A new school year brings new backpacks, new schedules, and — for many families — a required physical exam before a child can step onto the field, the court, or even the bus for a school trip. At CareArc, school, sports, and camp physicals are part of our comprehensive primary care services, and we want families across our service area to know exactly what's involved, what Kansas requires, and how to avoid a last-minute scramble.

What Kansas requires for school entry

Kansas law requires proof of a physical exam and up-to-date immunizations before a child can enroll in school, and most districts also require documentation before a student can join a sports team. Required school-entry immunizations typically include DTaP/Tdap, polio, MMR, hepatitis B, varicella, and — for older students — the meningococcal ACWY vaccine, usually given around age 11–12 with a booster at 16.

What a physical actually checks

  • Growth and development tracking compared to previous visits
  • Vision and hearing screening
  • Heart and lung function, including listening for murmurs that could affect safe sports participation
  • Musculoskeletal screening — joints, flexibility, and past injuries, especially for student athletes
  • A review of immunization records against Kansas school requirements
  • A confidential conversation about any health, nutrition, or mental health concerns

Sports physicals are a bit different

A sports or athletic physical (sometimes called a pre-participation physical exam) puts extra emphasis on cardiovascular screening and orthopedic history, since the goal is to catch anything that could put a young athlete at risk during practice or competition — not just confirm general health.

Why scheduling early matters

Physicals tend to cluster in the two weeks before school starts, which means longer waits everywhere, including at CareArc. Scheduling in July or early August gives your provider time to follow up on anything that needs a second look — a vision issue, a missing immunization, or a heart murmur that needs a referral — well before the first day of class or the first practice.

Cost shouldn't be a barrier

CareArc offers free or low-cost school and sports physicals for many students regardless of insurance status, and our Sliding Fee Scale is available for other visits based on household income. We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most major insurance plans, and no family is turned away because of inability to pay.
