Why are sports physicals important?

With over 46 million kids participating in sports annually, ensuring your young athlete is fit to play is the first step towards a successful game. Did you know that 62 percent of all organized sports-related injuries occur during practice rather than actual games? Football, basketball, and soccer have been identified as the top three sports where most injuries occur.

Sports physicals are typically required by athletic leagues and schools, and for good reason. They help identify any underlying issues that may hinder your child's ability to participate fully in a sport.

What does a sports physical include?

Our physicians will check your athlete's vital signs, joints, flexibility, and vision. They will conduct a brief fitness assessment to diagnose any potential limitations on physical activity.

When visiting CareArc for a sports physical, it is not necessary to bring a vaccination record. However, please be aware that some states require your child's immunization record before starting a new sport.

Here's a breakdown of what to expect during a sports physical at CareArc:

  1. Vitals Check: We will measure your child's pulse, blood pressure, weight, and height to ensure their vitals are within healthy ranges.
  2. Eye Exam: Our providers will assess your child's vision and determine if any prescription lenses are required or adjustments are needed.
  3. Fitness Assessment: We will examine your child's cardiovascular system, such as their heart and lungs, as well as evaluate their abdomen, ears, nose, and throat. Based on the assessment, we may recommend specific limitations on physical activity if necessary.
  4. Joints and Flexibility Check: By testing strength, flexibility, posture, and joint function, we can identify areas prone to injury and offer exercises and tips to help build a healthier body.
  5. Medical History Review: A thorough review of your child's medical history is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of their overall health. Any past illnesses, surgeries, or conditions like asthma or chest pains will be taken into consideration to diagnose potential issues and prevent future complications.

At CareArc, we prioritize the well-being and safety of your young athletes. Our sports physicals ensure they are prepared for their sports activities, reducing the risk of injuries and promoting their overall performance and health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do children need sports physicals?

Sports physicals are essential to verify an athlete's ability to safely participate in their preferred sport, complying with state, school, or sports organization regulations. Even when not mandated, these exams serve valuable purposes, including the maintenance of up-to-date vaccinations and the opportunity to address any concerns or inquiries.

What happens during a sports physical?

Sports physical examinations may encompass various specific requirements depending on the regulations set forth by the sport's organizers or governing body. Some common components of your child's sports physical may include:

  • Thorough assessment of vital signs, such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, heart rate, and rhythm.
  • Detailed inquiry about dietary supplements, medications, or prescriptions that your child may be taking.
  • Evaluation of flexibility, joint mobility, posture, and overall strength.
  • Comprehensive physical examination, including an assessment of the ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen.
  • Measurement of height and weight to track growth and development.
  • Review of the athlete's and family's medical history to gain a comprehensive understanding of any potential risk factors or pre-existing conditions.
  • Vision check to ensure optimal visual acuity for safe sports participation.

These components of a sports physical examination are designed to assess your child's overall health and well-being, identify any potential concerns or limitations, and provide appropriate recommendations for their participation in sports activities. It is crucial to prioritize these evaluations to promote the safety and optimal performance of your young athlete.

What are the benefits of sports physicals?

Ensuring the well-being of your child, teammates, and staff is paramount when participating in sports, which is why having a Pre-Participation Evaluation (PPE) is so important. This evaluation not only meets eligibility requirements but also offers several additional benefits:

  • Proactive Health Assessment: A sports physical allows for a proactive assessment of your child's general health. By reviewing their medical history, immunization records, and conducting a routine physical exam, potential health concerns can be identified and addressed promptly. This ensures that any immunization gaps are filled, promoting optimal health and eligibility for participation.
  • Valuable Training Tips: If your child is attending a sports camp, your CareArc provider can provide valuable training advice and injury prevention tips specific to the sport. These insights can help your child train effectively, minimize the risk of injuries, and enhance their overall performance during the event.
  • Addressing Medical Conditions: The review of your child's medical history encompasses any family medical conditions, such as diabetes, as well as prior illnesses like asthma. This allows your provider to assess the status of these conditions and recommend appropriate medications or remedies. For instance, if asthma is identified, carrying an inhaler may be recommended to ensure prompt treatment if symptoms arise during sports activities.
  • Evaluation of Pre-existing and Current Conditions: Pre-existing conditions, such as allergies, and current injuries must be evaluated to ensure safe participation. Youth sports can pose various risks, ranging from minor sprains and strains to more severe conditions like concussions and heat stroke. Identifying these potential health issues through the screening process enables appropriate management and prevention of further pain, injury, or re-injury.

What should I bring for a sports physical?

Parents/Guardians, please complete the necessary forms' parents' sections before the visit to expedite the sports physical exam process. Remember to bring the following medical information:

  • For participants with a history of a heart ailment or cardiac event, provide a statement from the primary care provider or treating physician confirming evaluation and clearance for participation.
  • Bring the primary care provider's name and contact information.
  • Provide relevant health and medical history, including allergies, current medications, and existing conditions.
  • Our providers can verify vaccinations given at CareArc or with proper documentation from another healthcare provider.

Note that a sports physical exam does not replace a comprehensive annual wellness exam. Thank you for your cooperation in prioritizing your child's health and safety during sports activities.
