What to Expect at Your First Women's Health Visit

September 17, 2026

Putting off a first women's health visit is common — sometimes out of nervousness, sometimes simply not knowing what to expect. Here's a straightforward look at what a typical first visit at CareArc involves, and what current national guidelines recommend for women of different ages.

Before the exam: a conversation

Your visit starts with a conversation, not an exam table. Your provider will ask about your health history, menstrual cycle, any symptoms or concerns, sexual health, and family history. This is your chance to ask questions too — birth control options, fertility, menopause, or anything else on your mind.

What the exam may include

Depending on your age and health history, your visit might include a general physical exam, a breast exam, a blood pressure check, and — depending on your age — a pelvic exam or cervical cancer screening. Your provider will explain each step before it happens, and you can ask them to stop or slow down at any time.

Current screening guidelines by age

  • Ages 21–29: A Pap test every 3 years is the standard recommendation for cervical cancer screening
  • Ages 30–65: Current guidance allows for HPV testing alone every 5 years, a Pap test every 3 years, or co-testing (both) every 5 years
  • Age 40 and up: Mammogram screening typically begins in this range; your provider can help you decide the right starting point and frequency based on your personal and family history
  • After 65: Many women who've had consistent normal results can stop cervical cancer screening — your provider will confirm whether that applies to you

You're in control

You can bring a support person, ask for a chaperone, and decline any part of the exam you're not comfortable with. Our goal is for you to leave feeling informed and respected, not rushed.

Ongoing care, not a one-time visit

Women's health isn't a single appointment — it's an ongoing part of your overall care. CareArc's providers coordinate women's health with your primary care, so nothing falls through the cracks between visits.
