The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has confirmed two cases of measles in Kansas this month, both linked to domestic travel. The cases come as the United States experiences its worst year for measles since 1991, with more than 3,290 confirmed cases reported across 47 states and jurisdictions in 2026 alone, and 38 new outbreaks reported this year.
The seriousness of the current outbreak was underscored this month when Pennsylvania health officials confirmed a fourth measles-associated death this year — an 18-year-old with a rare and severe neurological complication of the disease. None of the four Pennsylvania residents who died were vaccinated against measles.
While no cases have been confirmed in Lyon County, CareArc Community Health is closely monitoring the situation and encourages every family to make sure their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccinations are up to date.
"Measles is one of the most contagious diseases we know of, and this year has shown us just how quickly it can move once it finds an under-vaccinated community. The good news is that the MMR vaccine is extremely effective — two doses provide about 97% protection. If your family is behind on vaccinations, now is the time to catch up, not after a case shows up close to home," said Dr. Ladun Oyenuga, Lyon County Health Officer.
What Families Should Know
- Measles spreads through the air and can linger in a space for up to two hours after an infected person leaves.
- Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.
- Children should receive their first MMR dose at 12–15 months and their second at 4–6 years, before starting kindergarten.
- Adults who are unsure of their vaccination history should talk to their provider — most adults need at least one dose.
- Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads down the body.
